Black & White

 August 16, 2011

The Bee:   Mommy the black man is bad.  Brother told me.

Ladybug: And, and, and, Mommy.... you can't call them white man.  Brother said that to me.

The Bee: That's right Mommy... you have to call them  Darth Vader and Storm Trooper.

 Ladybug:  Yup that's right.

You can't make this stuff up.

Car Talk

 July 31, 2011

The Scene:   The Sequoia, Nolan crammed beside Nina and Macy in car seats, Dart and I are riding up front and "Mulan" is playing on the truck's movie screen.

The Prevailing Attitude:  The girls are tired and cranky.  Nolan is 11.

Nolan:  Macy, Mulan is from China just like you.

Macy: I am not Mulan.  I am Pocahontas.

Nolan:  No you are Chinese so you have to be Mulan.

Macy: No I'm not.  Mommy did braids in my hair.  I have Pocahontas hair.

Nolan: No you have Mulan hair because you are Chinese.

Macy:  No I don't!  I am Pocahontas!  I am going to marry John Smith!

Nina:  I have magic hair.  It's turning yellow...like Tangled.

Nolan:  Your hair is turning blond because you are in the sun.

Nina:  Mooooom-meeeee, Nolan says my hair is not yellow!!!

Me:  Nolan leave them alone!  Nina you have magic yellow hair.  It is beautiful.  Macy you can marry John Smith.

Dart: No she can't.

Nolan: (snicker)

I mean how on earth would he dress them?

well I got an email today and now we know.

sigh, well at least they match each other.

Now I'm wondering how many "I heart daddy" shirts he packed?

No Training Wheels!

 June 21, 2011

Taking a break from China to share a milestone reached in the Printy house.  Both girls learned to ride a two wheeler sans training wheels today!  It took Macy a bit longer but eventually they both got it. What a great way to mark the first day of summer.

Their big softy of a brother ran up and down the street teaching them.  Taking one training wheel off at a time he coaxed then into coasting and then pedaling on their own.  So proud of my sweet girls ...

and my sweet, nurturing, awesome big brother, son.

Not long ago Kiefer said to me that he wasn't sure what he would do with his life but that he knew he was going to be a great dad.  Got to agree with him on that one!

A Perfect Dad

 June 19, 2011

Fathers Day.

It wasn’t always a celebration in my house.

In fact for much of my life it was at best just another Sunday.

Because I did not have a father.

At least not that I can remember.

Four months before I turned four years old my father died, killed himself to be more precise; a single gunshot to the abdomen according to the death certificate.

It was the 70’s and frankly my family wasn’t the most functional to begin with so no one talked about “it” or him at all.  Ever.

Instead I spent many years imagining what he might have been like; what it would be like to have a “daddy”.  While most other girls dreamed about the prince who would marry them one day, I fantasied about (and prayed for) a father who would walk me down the aisle.

In my school girl imagination my father would be the perfect combination of strong and sweet. He would do all the “usual” things a perfect dad would do like kiss me on the forehead and swoop me up in his arms to dance me around the room. He would toss me high in the air and catch me in his big arms. He would build me a swing, tighten the handlebars on my bike, give me rides on his shoulders, help with my math homework, teach me to drive, turn the porch light on in the middle of my first kiss.

And he would be my first love, tell me I was beautiful, be the man I compared every man to evermore.

He would be perfect.

(Honestly it’s a wonder I’m not (more) dysfunctional than I am.)

My only sense of a father was the one I conjured up in my child like imagination.  A little girl's fantasy.  An mythical creature of impeccable, impossible,  paternal perfection.

But don’t feel pity because here’s the point of my sharing this with you.

20 years later I met and married and built a life with a man who, as fate would have it, turned out to be the perfect daddy to our children.

And he healed me.

Backyard Pond Hockey

 January 12, 2011

This afternoon Nolan's entire peewee hockey team showed up at our house for an old school pond hockey scrimmage.

The kids seemed to have lots of fun skating, shooting the puck and even shoveling snow-which they had to do several times as it snowed the whole time they were out there.  My super hockey dad husband set up a make shift locker room in our lower level, cranked up the out door speakers and even had a nice backyard  fire going. Everything a hockey player could ask for right?  I thought it was brutally cold but the kids played for hours.

When it was finally too dark to see the puck anymore the kids came in for hot chocolate and cookies while they thawed their rosy cheeks and wet feet. Got to admit it was a fairly perfect cold weather afternoon.

Sometimes the frigid Midwest has its moments...

Game On...

 December 28, 2010

We are a hockey family.  And yesterday Dad decided it was high time to teach the girls to skate.  They are both four now, almost a year behind the curve for team Printy. Slackers. Of course I would love to have a pair of figure skaters but that's just crazy talk in our house.  I'll have to settle for pink skate laces.  Both girls really liked it but ended up getting cold.  Maybe next time we'll try an indoor rink.
What a cool big brother!

Merry Christmas Morning from The Printy's

 December 25, 2010

Matching Christmas jammies...a long standing, moderately embarrassing Printy family tradition. As a friend pointed out, we now have so many kids in the family we need to label them!
Believe it or not I've never had a kid wake up early on Christmas morning, until now.  The boys are laid back, type B minus, master chillaxers.  On Christmas morning I am always the first one to wake so I have time to go downstairs and make the cinnamon rolls and coffee and mimosas.  I light candles and the fireplace.  I turn on Christmas music and when the scene is perfectly set, usually at the civilized time of 9or 9:30 in the morning, I go back up stairs and wake the boys (Dart included).  Well not so this year.  This year was the year of A plus, plus, rise a dawn, sneak down the stairs, girl power patrol!

Yes this year it was all different. It was of course Macy's first Christmas at home but really it was Nina's too, (we were in Kazakhstan and the Mediterranean the two years prior).  Anyway the excitement of Santa got the best of her and Nina woke up and headed down to check out the situation on her own.  Sadly I did not get the photo of her coming down the stairs in her Christmas jammies nor did I get the look of awe and amazement when she first saw the piles of presents on the tree.  Nope what I got was the report; "Mommy, the Grinch did not steal our tree" she whispered as I tried to pry my eyes open. "Mommy Santa brought me a shopping cart, come see, come see".  The realization that I missed it washed over me as I pulled myself out of bed.  I couldn't be too disappointed though because Nina was practically vibrating with excitement.

After a mad dash to get everything in order the official processional down the stairs was begun.  We got it all on video; Macy's wide eyes, the boys fist pumps and somehow Nina's awestruck face, like she was seeing it all for the first time again: the magic of Christmas still intact.

Still now I know better Nina Bea, I am on to you.  Next year I am going to set the alarm good and early.  No more lazing around with the B team.  The morning crew is in town now and they could care less about protocol or tradition or cinnamon rolls! Next year I will be blurry eyed but ready, (either that or I am locking you in your room).

I guess we were all on the "NICE" list...but I promise it was close for a few Printy's who shall go nameless.

Ahhh the #1 thing on the girls list, SHOPPING CARTS!!

Mama needs her coffee, while Nina Bea samples the eggnog.

Aidan's favorite gift this year...anything World of Warcraft (ugh).

I think Nina would have been happy just to get the stocking...this child loves her chocolate (just like her mommy).

American Girl doll Julie, best friend to AGD Ivy and only slightly shorter than Nina.

My awesome, thoughtful husband got me an ornament to mark the occasion of Macy's first Christmas.  After four years of "waiting for my China baby" ornaments, this was very meaningful. (yup I'm crying here.)

Macy (my American Girl Doll) with her AG Ivy doll (Julie's Chinese best friend).  I bought this years ago in New York when we were still waiting for our China baby and couldn't even spell Kazakhstan.

My smiley Nolan was happy with every gift...his favorite, an IPOD Touch.
My sweet niece Courtney home on leave from the Air Force.  She is stationed in Phoenix and was in Korea this year so we were very happy she could be home for the holidays.

Can't take the kid out of Kiefer (even if he does look like Grizzly Adams).  He loved his mixing board.

Of course Christmas is also Nina's birthday.  After all the celebrating we almost forgot the cake...

...but we remembered right before bedtime.  Happy 4th Birthday Nina Bea!
