Trick or Treat!

 October 30, 2010

Macy was so cooperative about the make up.

The glitter was her favorite part (of course).

Nina was far less patient...by this point she had already asked if I was done yet.

Serious French mime potential.

Her face is so tiny.

No glitter yet but still pretty cool.

Honestly I can't believe she let us put all this on her.

She doesn't really understand what it's all about but she knows there is candy at some point!

A whole new level of Mommy and Me dressing.

Can I just say how much fun I'm having with these two girls.

Nolan cracked me up with his costume choice.

It was a lot of walking for their little legs.

They both had the "trick or treat" and unprompted "thank you" down...(sigh) so proud.

Once she got it, she was all business...on to the next house for MORE candy!

Impish.

The little braids had flashing lights...not that we weren't already glowing.

The great thing about cute little kids is people give them a ton of candy (not that I have eaten any or anything).

They started to get tired and cold after about an hour.

Not sure if green is my color?

Neighborhood trick or treat pit stop....btw don't you think Dart should have dressed up??

A girl can't live on Skittles alone...God knows she tried.

Stop at the "Party Here" neighbors to warm up by the fire and have some hot dogs and hot chocolate.

I Got A Picture!

 October 22, 2010

Two years ago today we got this simple message from our agency;

"Subject: I got a picture!

Lori,

We were able to get a picture of the girl! I don’t have the exact birth date but they told us she will be 2 at the end of December. She appears healthy too."

Attached to the email was a picture that would forever change our lives...

We had already "accepted the referral" based on the phone call a week earlier. On the call our agency Director shared the briefest description of her personality and health and approximate age, she apologized that the child was not younger and told me that other infants would be available soon. It wasn't nearly enough to make such an important decision but I knew instantly that we were supposed to adopt this child. Call it what you will but for me at that instant the peace of God came over me and I knew this was my daughter. After that there was no doubt or fear. I never asked for a medical review or met another child and truth be told, I said yes without even talking first to Dart. She was ours, it was His plan, the rest was details.

I got the email at work and rushed home to open it with Dart.  The older boys were already home from school and Aidan pulled out the video camera. Having been told she was Russian and in Ust I was expecting a blond blue eyed child and frankly I was quietly disappointed, not because blond blued eyed children aren't beautiful (I have two) but for two years I carried an image of an olive skinned, brown-eyed daughter. Imagine my surprise and delight when I saw this little beauty. OK you don't have to imagine, just watch...

Post Placement Visit from the Social Worker

 October 20, 2010

Nolan (with a great deal of concern): So Mom are they going to let us keep them?
Me: Keep who?
Nolan: The girls.  Is that social worker lady going let us keep them?
Me: Yes Nolan they are here forever.
Nolan: Oh good.

As you might have already guessed our social worker was here today for Macy's six month and Nina's two year post placement reports.  Pretty non invasive stuff really but I still haven't gotten used to someone "checking up" on me.  (It's weird too because Macy has only been home 4 months and Nina 21 months but it takes so long to get the written report we need to plan everything well in advance of the deadlines.)

It all went pretty smoothly and at the end she asked us rather directly, "Do you think you are going to do it (adopt) again?" "Ummm, ahhh, hmmmm, we (by which I do mean my husband) don't know",  I lied. (Meanwhile in my head I was thinking come on Dart say yes, say yes, please say yes!)  Instead Dart was strategically silent.  The social worker then said, "well you guys are so good at this I think you could". I thanked her for the compliment.  I am pretty sure Dart was planning ways to enter the witness relocation program.

Far Far Away...

 October 13, 2010

Kiefer left tonight for a six month study abroad program in Patagonia. These are the moments when you question everything you have ever done as a mother. You hope and pray it was enough but in the back of your mind there is a nagging doubt that it wasn't.

A dear friend shared this apt quote with me today..

"How selfhood begins with a walking away, and love is proved in the letting go."
- Robert Cecil Day-Lewis

So very true, I just wish the letting go part wasn't so hard
