Pat Robertson on the 700 Club: Who the Heck is Watching This Junk??
August 26, 2012
A woman wrote in to the 700 Club wanting to know why the men she dated always broke up with her when they found out that she had three children that had been adopted from foreign countries...
Her question prompted a loving Christian response (heavy sarcasm) from Pat Robertson who answered, "because a man doesn't want to take on the United Nations"
Anyone else cringe at the racist undertones in this comment uttered by an entitled, old, white, so called Christian man?
He goes on to offer his expert opinion (after-all he knows someone who adopted a child with brain damage) that people should be careful about adopting children because "you just never know what's been done to a child before you get that child; what kind of sexual abuse there has been, what kind of cruelty, what kind of food deprivation"
that (WAIT FOR IT)...
might cause them to grow up "weird".
According to Mr Robertson we can minster to orphans but we don't have to bring them into our homes. Cementing his Christ like image he says something else about not making their problems our own.
I guess it's ok to "minister" as long as we don't get messy...(guess Mother Teresa and Sister Esperenza missed that memo)??
Adoption certainly isn't for everyone and frankly it is not the ultimate solution to the orphan crisis. James 1:27 which instructs Christians to minster to the needs of widows and orphans certainly does not compel us to adopt. But that is not Mr Robertson's message. Instead his uninformed and offensive message rooted in racism and intertwined with adoption stereotypes seeks to warn people about the inherent potential for weirdness in adoptees.
I am trying to imagine Jesus Christ responding to this women's question as Robertson did...
Of course this is nothing new for Robertson. I think the only surprising thing here is that anyone is watching this garbage or that anyone would bother to seek his advice in the first place.
